크레이키해드 학생이 Cancer foundation을 위해서 $3,000을 자선 모금한 방법

크레이키해드에 다니는 15살의 Laura Robinson 이라는 학생이  Cancer Society and the Child Cancer Foundation을 위해서 모금을 하기 위한 방법은 약간 특별난 방법이었습니다. 4년전 아버님이 암으로 돌아가시고, 할아버지도 암으로 투병을 하고 계신 가운데, Cancer Society and the Child Cancer Foundation을 위해서 머리를 삭발하는 이벤트를 기획을 하였습니다. 머리를 짜르는 사람에게 $10씩 기부금을 받기위해서, 많은 사람들을 초청하였고, 또한 가족의 support를 받기위해서 가족들까지 초청이 되어서 이런 이벤트를 했다고합니다.

 

평일 크레이키해드 여자고등학교 점심 시간에 열린 행사에 많은 사람들이 눈물도 흘리고 감동을 받았다는 소식입니다.

 

제가 느낀 몇가지의 것들은 학생의 의견을 존중해서, 학교가 학생들의 활동에 대해서 많은 관심을 보이고 지원을 해준다는 점이었습니다. 한국과 같았으면 머리를 깍는다는 일이 여자학생으로서도 힘들겠지만, 학교에서 이런 행사를 하는것에 대해서 얼마나 호의적으로 나올까라는 생각도 들었습니다.  학교가 이런 개인의 자발적인 펀드레이징 행사에 큰 감동을 보이고, 또한 개인의 이야기에 귀를 기울일수 있다는 점에서 상당히 본받을 점이라고 생각이 듭니다.

 

다른 한가지는 Laura라는 학생이 개인적으로 많은 어려움, 특히 아버지를 암으로 잃으면서 가지게 된 아픔을 암으로 고통받는 사람들을 위해서 펀드레이징을 한다고 하였을때, 흔쾌히 가족들이 서포트를 했다는 부분같습니다. 학생이기때문에, 아니면 나이가 어리기때문에, 무엇을 할수 있을지에 대해서 의문을 가지는것이 아니라, 모든 가족이 함께 참여해서, Laura의 자선활동에 대해서 Speech도 하고, 학교에 함께 의견도 조정해 가면서 이런 이벤트를 기획했다는 점에서 상당히 본 받을점이 많다고 생각이 듭니다.

 

 

It was a lunch hour of laughs and tears at Craighead Diocesan School as student Laura Robinson, 15, of Timaru, had her hair shaved off to support cancer charities.

Laura braved the razor in front of dozens of students, friends and family, raising $3000 for the Cancer Society and the Child Cancer Foundation.

Many were moved to tears as they made speeches about Laura and watched her locks disappear.

Four years ago Laura lost her father to cancer, and a year after that she came up with the idea of having her head shaved.

Her mother, Allison Robinson, said when Laura first mentioned the idea to her, she hoped it would go away. "Her dad was brave and she is very brave too. It's for a good cause and she's being unselfish, and most teenagers aren't these days."

In the Craighead auditorium yesterday, people were invited to cut off a lock of Laura's hair for $10.

Among those grabbing the scissors was her grandfather, Cliff Robinson, who Laura said was like a father to her. Mr Robinson was diagnosed with bowel cancer this year and was an inspiration to her, she said.

"[When Laura told me about the shave] I said, `You're not cutting that beautiful hair off'. But then I looked at the cause," Mr Robinson said. He's a Timaru South Rotary Club member, and his fellow members contributed to the fundraising. Mr Robinson joked that now Laura had a bald head, he would find it easier to tell her apart from her twin sister, Abby.

Abby was one of those who spoke at yesterday's shave-off.

"Rather than feeling sorry for herself, [Laura] wants to help people that went through a similar struggle [to that] we went through," she said.

Laura's friends described her as kind-hearted, brave and inspirational.

The $3000 Laura has raised so far was double what she was aiming for.
