뉴질랜드 소도시- 티마루 그란트리 다운스 초등학교의 Animal Farm

그란트리 다운스 초등학교와 인접한 Harvy Norman이라는 회사가 그란트리 다운스 초등학교에

학생들이 동물들과 함께 지내면서 Town Kids가 좀처럼 경험할수 없는 기회를 주고자 6헥타르의 땅을

리스를 해 주기로 했다고합니다. 

 

30마리의 양들이 뛰노는 학교농장, 양들은 학교 버스 운전기사를 하시는  John Doggett 이 아이들이 양들을 돌볼수 있도록 방목을 하기로 했습니다.

 

단순히 학생들이 보고 지나가는 학교농장이 아니라, 아이들이 양들을 돌보고, 그 수익금으로 용돈을 벌수 있게 하는등 상당히 큰 계획을 가지고 있는것으로 보이네요.

 

그란트리 다운스 초등학교의 모토가 "country school in the town" 입니다.

도시안의 시골학교, 그란트리 다운스 초등학교가 이런 모토를 지향할수 있는 것이 아마도 이런 다양한 활동들이 학교안에서 이루어질수 있어서이지 않을가 하네요.

Country has come to town at Grantlea Downs School.

Principal Dave Hawkey said about 30 sheep had taken up residence in the school's newly acquired land, which Harvey Norman had allowed it to lease.

The sheep belonged to John Doggett, the school bus driver, who was letting the children look after them.

It was all part of the school's new animal farm, which would eventually see bobby calves grazing and some horticulture grown on the six hectares.

Mr Hawkey said the idea of an animal farm came up after Harvey Norman offered the land to the school. The school already had a relationship with the company after working on the Clean Streams project, where pupils tidied up the nearby Taitarakihi Creek as part of the Enviroschools initiative.

Harvey Norman "saw it as a good community, neighbourly activity to be involved in and we always jump at opportunities where there's hands-on learning for kids", he said.

Mr Hawkey said he also hoped the animals would raise extra money for the school, as the calves and any future sheep would be sold to farmers when they reached a certain stage. "We have also considered that children who show a real interest and commitment will be rewarded with pocket money."

For "town kids", the experience of being on a farm would be "quite different", he said. Parents from farming backgrounds had helped the school plan the project, while some farmers had offered to donate a calf.
