More than a hundred people will scour Caroline Bay for virtual creatures as a global gaming phenomenon sweeps through South Canterbury.

They will be playing Pokémon Go, a mobile game that uses GPS technology to drop people in a real-time, real-life hunt for little

creatures - called Pokémon - near landmarks in their area.

The game was released last week and, internationally, is the most used application on the Apple and Android platforms. Analysts predicted the number of daily users could surpass Twitter on Android.

Victoria University student Lilia Alexander has organised Pokemon walks across New Zealand, including one for this Saturday in Timaru.

She expected more than 10,000 people to attend the 22 walks nationwide: more than 160 had registered their interest in the Caroline Bay walk in Timaru.

The Facebook-organised event had also garnered more than 330 people "interested" in the event, she said.

In Timaru, 31-year-old woman Lydia Newlife tried the game after finishing a cleaning job. Soon, she  was far away from her starting destination.

"I was running around catching Pokémons, then when I looked up I was almost in the main street of town," she said.

She had also heard of someone getting into a minor car accident while out looking for Pokémon, she said.

Roncalli College student Molly Piddington, 17, said almost all of the students in her year were playing the game or making some social comment about it.

Even her 10-year-old sister was playing the game, she said.

The game was a great opportunity to meet new people as "hot spots" in the game were common areas in the town like Caroline Bay.

"I met like ten people [At Caroline Bay] on Sunday when we were out looking," she said.

Piddington had spent about five hours with friends exploring the Timaru area for Pokémon on Sunday, she said.

Alexander said police in each area would be contacted to inform officers not to be alarmed at the potential mass crowd of people walking together.

The game encouraged interaction and exploration but people were advised not to venture into areas they did not know, or go out alone at night, she said.

The Pokémon video game franchise began 20 years ago with the first release of Pokémon: Red and Green on the Nintendo Game Boy hand held device in 1996.
