Uni to raise NCEA English standard-오클랜드 대학교, 영어성적 관련

2016년부터 오클랜드 대학교에 입학을 하려는 학생들은  University Entrance 는 당연히 통과를 해야하지만, 

level 2(12학년)에서 literacy credit 의 조건을 현재의 8개의 크리딧에서 17개의 크리딧으로 올릴예정이라고 합니다. 

이는 유학생들에게만 해당하는것이 아니라, 대학에 입학하는 학생들이, 에세이를 쓸때 문법에 맞는, 앞뒤가 만즌 논리와 

일관성이 있는 글을 쓰는데, 어려움을 겪기때문이라고 합니다. 

이러한 것들이 아카데믹한 글을 쓰는데 있어서 큰 장애물이 되고 있으며, 크리딧이 모자르다고 하더라도, 대학에 

등록을 할수는 있으나, 추가의 영어관련 과목을 이수해야한다고 하고 있습니다. 

아마도 많은 학생들이 level 2 영어과목을 12학년에만 공부하는것이 아니라 13학년에도 공부를 다시 해야할 수 있을수도 있으며

이러한 규정에 대해서 가장 큰 타격을 받는것은 유학생그룹이라고 합니다. 

유학을 함에 있어서, 가장 중요한것은 첫번째도 "영어" 두번째도 "영어" 세번째도 "영어" 입니다. 

충분하지 않은 영어로 대학교에서 공부를 한다는것이 어찌보면 상당히 무모한것이라고도 여기어질수 있는데, 

이는 대학을 겨우 졸업을 했다고 하더라도 결국 대학을 졸업한 후 취업시장에서는 기준이하의 취업준비생들은 

현실적으로 외면을 당할수 밖에 없기때문입니다. 

뉴질랜드 공부, 물론 절대적인 양의 한국의 고등학생보다 적겠지만, 유학의 목적이 단순히 대학 진학, 졸업뿐만이 아닌

졸업후의 취업까지 바라봐야하는것이기때문에, 아카데믹적으로 충분한 영어실력을 가지는것이 정말 중요하다고 하겠습니다. 

또한 유학을 고려할때, 언어라는것이 어느정도 시간이 필요한부분도 있기때문에, 최소한 고등학교에서 머물러야하는

기간을 2년이상에서 3년이상으로 잡으시는것이 절대적으로 필요한 현실입니다.

Enrolling at the University of Auckland is to become more difficult.

Currently students need eight credits at level 2 or higher to gain a university entrance. That will increase to 17 credits.In 2016 New Zealand's biggest university will more than double NCEA English requirements for undergraduate courses.

University deputy vice-chancellor John Morrow told Nine to Noon programme the English skills of many students are lacking.

"They're not able to write consistent coherent sentences, which meet grammatical requirements, and to build on those sentences in order to produce coherent paragraphs."

He said that lack of skill hampers students' ability to produce academic reports.

Professor Morrow said students who do not get enough English credits can still enrol if they take extra English classes

However a careers advisor worries that lifting requirements in English will limit students' subject choices.

Head of careers at Auckland's Western Springs College Kay Wallace said some students will have to repeat Level 2 English to get sufficient credits.

She says some students find studying literature irrelevant if they know they want to study something else.

Ms Wallace says international students will be hit the hardest by the changes.
