Stafford Street: From the Piazza to Timaru Christian Centre |
It's official: Timaru now has free wireless internet access.
Timaru's public wi-fi network officially launches today after a month of testing by visitors and residents in the city.
Coverage stretches down Stafford St from the piazza overlooking Caroline Bay to the George St intersection, as well as to several side streets and the iSite area.
The network, Vetta Public Wifi, is a collaboration between Vetta Technologies and Aoraki Development Business and Tourism. The two entities shared the cost of hardware and have used the IT company's existing systems to make it operational.
During the testing phase, the network was available to the public in a limited area of the CBD. Between 100 and 200 users logged on daily, officials said.
To support the network in the CDB, access points were installed at several businesses that agreed to participate in the programme: one to one Group, Sports Check, Camera & Digital Kodak Express, 2 Stags Cafe, Reid & Wilson-First National and The Oxford.
All the businesses approached about the project were very supportive, ADBT chief executive Wendy Smith said.
"Aoraki Development Business & Tourism is pleased to collaborate with local businesses to provide infrastructure that can help to attract and grow businesses and visitor numbers to our region," Mrs Smith said.
"Public wi-fi invites both travellers and those here on business to enjoy more time in Timaru's CBD."
Users have access to the wi-fi network at no cost for 30 minutes a day. After that they would have the option to pay a la carte for additional time - $2.50 for three hours, $5 for one day, or $20 for a week, Vetta Technologies managing director Shaun Fisher explained.
